How digital queues cut hospital OPD waiting time by 35%

Token displays, pre-registration and lab interfacing — what actually moved the needle at a 200-bed hospital.

Long OPD queues are rarely a doctor problem. At a 200-bed hospital we worked with, doctors were idle 20% of the morning while patients waited — because registration, billing and lab requests were all on paper.

Where the time went

We timed 400 patient journeys. Registration took 11 minutes on average, billing another 9, and lab requisitions were re-typed twice. The consultation itself averaged 7 minutes.

Three changes that worked

  • Pre-registration by phone and website, so returning patients skip the desk.
  • A token display with live waiting time, so patients stop asking the front desk.
  • Lab interfacing, so results flow from the analyser straight into the patient record.

The result after eight weeks

Average waiting time fell from 74 to 48 minutes, the front desk handled 30% more patients with the same staff, and lab revenue rose because no request was lost on paper.

Key takeaways

Measure the journey before buying anything, fix registration and lab requests first, and let a visible queue do the communication your staff used to do by hand.
